California Trip

The day started out very nicely with eggs and bacon on the deck of the restaurant at Meadowood hotel (one of the nicest hotels I’ve ever stayed at, dozens of acres in the heart of wone country), followed by an hour long massage!

We then made it to the lighthouse at very end of Point Reyes. They say it’s the windiest place on the West coast and it sure felt like it ought to be. It looks a lot like it could be in Ireland with the steep cliffs and sometimes lunar landscape due to the lack of trees.

The drive from the to Jenner, our destination, was really but long. The first part was a good many really cool looking houses on stilts (‘launches’), followed by a couple far-west type towns which looked like mini theme parks except for the locals hanging outside the bars and restaurants.

We finally hit the sea as the sun was finishing to set. All you could see was a few stands of maroon and purple at the horizon between the dark blue sea and slightly lighter sky. You could discern black rocks dotting the sea below from the road’s elevated position.

The road bent this way and that, and although I’d really enjoyed similar roads earlier on in the day, the lack of light and some 5 hours of riding, as well as the temperature having plummetted, pretty much knocked the fun out of that.

We eventually got to Jenner, where we’re staying because the guide book recommends it. Our hotel was the first building as we hit town, so we were so cold tired and hungry that we had dinner there and have no intentions to venture into town. Jenner will have to wait till tomorrow.
