California Trip

California Trip

Today started out with a short trop from the hotel to one of the most breath-taking views I have ever seen.

We drove up a short windy road which led us up high in the hills over-looking the Golden Gate bridge and the bay.
We had an almost 360 view, with the bridge and the sea at our feet, Alcatraz and the city off in the foggy distance. Boat’s foghorns sounded every few minutes and gave the view an almost magical feel. The fog was so dense halway through the bridge that only the tip of it’s second tower was sneaking past the misty mass, and the city looked like something out of Star Wars.

We got lost after that, making our way – or trying to anyway – to Point Reyes. We ended up on the wrong highway, turned off and took a different route to Inverness than the one we’d expected. This turned out to be very lucky as we found ourselves in deep country side with swerving roads and very little traffic, and finally through a small redwood forest. The first one we encoutered so far and we had to stop to admire the dense and majestically oversized trees. We looked around around for ewok, or at least a storm-trooper patrol or something, but no joy…

The diversity of landscape and flora is one of the things that really make California exceptional. In a couple hours you can go through forests, lush hills, dried yellow and thick-folded mountains as well as sand-dunes and cliffs. You never know what’s coming next and it makes travelling on a motorbike so much more exciting because you’re right in the middle of it, flowing with the bends of the road, smelling the country-side…

(although you do get bored at times. earlier I found myself yelling at cows as we were driving past at 60 mph, just to see if they could hear me..I got a bit carried away at the task and it was a close call as I saw at the last minute that the road had huge pot-holes in it…)

Eventually we got to Inverness, but had to give Point Reyes a miss as we were running out of petrol. We’re hoping to make it there tomorrow on our way to Jenner.

So we went to our fourth and last nice hotel instead (it’s road-side truck stops hereonin). Turns out I managed to get very red and crisp version of a farmer’s tan, and I’m radiating with heat…and Nico’s pretty much the same…with a farmer’s tan, maybe the cows will take more notice of me tomorrow…
